Growing Gardens Food Project

Growing Gardens Food Project Farm, Longmont

The Growing Gardens Food Project provides food, plant starts and seeds to community members in need to increase access to fresh, organic produce.

The Growing Gardens Food Project is an exciting opportunity for Growing Gardens to promote health and self-sufficiency in the community.  Each year, we offer thousands of plant starts and seed packets to those in need, so that they can grow food for their families.  We also donate thousands of pounds of produce to participants who do not typically have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2016, we opened the Food Project Farm in Longmont in partnership with the YMCA of Boulder Valley. The Farm donates 100% of its produce and plant starts to low-income community members.

FRESH PRODUCE DONATIONS

Growing Gardens donates produce to shelters, food pantries, charities, and needy homes throughout the community.  During the growing season, we send out a crew of Cultiva youth members to glean unsold produce at the farmer’s market for donation. We are also organizing a program that encourages and supports our community gardeners to donate excess produce from their garden to charities that we support. Finally, we are excited to be teaming up with the Longmont YMCA on a one-acre organic vegetable garden and educational site where all of the produce grown is offered to local food pantries and for daily hot meals.

Donations in  2016:

  • 16,069 pounds of produce donated to low-income families.

  • 1,380 pounds of produce donated by community gardeners.

  • 16,304 people received plant starts, seed packets or fresh produce donations.

  • 8,876 plant starts and 704 seed packets were donated to low income gardeners so that they could grow their own food.
  • Partners include: Community Food Share, EFAA (Emergency Family Assistance Association), OUR Center There with Care, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children), I Have a Dream, and El Comite.
